Barbara LeVan Fisher grew up in southern California and moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1999 to open a design studio specializing in publishing design.

“One of my most vivid childhood memories was of sitting on the floor of my bedroom in front of  the bookshelf and looking at My Book House children’s book series that was richly decorated with classical art and included some of the best literature ever written for any age. I remember making the decision “This is what I want to do when I grow up.”

After pursuing degrees in art and graphic design at Ventura City College and UC Santa Barbara, Barbara worked for City Central, a public relations department for the City of Ventura, California. After a year of designing promotions at City Central she was hired by Chase Brothers Dairy as the lead graphic designer. She would often roam the grounds of the dairy farm with her sketchbook drawing pictures of the cows, pigs and goats which were then used in weekly print ads. When a local advertising agency noticed her unusual handwritten and illustrated ads for Chase Brothers Dairy she was hired as a graphic designer at The Murphy Organization in Oxnard, California. There she worked on corporate accounts such as Mechanics Bank and helped design a wide variety of advertising for local businesses. Her favorite project was a logo design for The Fence Factory in Ventura which is still in use throughout California nearly 40 years later. In 1989 she was hired as a production designer at Gospel Light Publications in Ventura, California and worked on interior book design for sunday school curriculum for two years. From there she was promoted to manager of the the in-house advertising agency at Gospel Light and oversaw a department of five people. Two years later she proposed the bookcover design be brought in-house and moved into a newly created position of designing and overseeing all the bookcovers for Regal Books. Three years later she was promoted to the Creative Director/Package Design and was responsible for all packaging design for seven different divisions of Gospel Light Publications.

In 1999 Barbara moved to the San Francisco bay area and opened LeVan Fisher Design. Within it’s first year, LeVan Fisher Design had developed strong relationships with publishers in the bay area and across the country. Working with the talented team at HarperSanFrancisco/HarperOne, she has designed over twenty New York Times best-selling and other award winning book covers during the last fifteen years. With authors like Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Ram Dass, Barbara Brown Taylor, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan and others Barbara has helped craft beautiful book jackets for some of  the most innovative and enlightened contemporary thinkers. Having worked on a vast spectrum of religion, spirituality and philosophy, she has designed successful book covers for nearly every facet of the religious, metaphysical and spirituality market. Barbara is a member of the Episcopal church and had a great devotion and passion for all things interspiritual/inspirational and for the art of publishing.

Barbara has served on several boards including Habitat for Humanity and other local business boards. She worked for two years as a volunteer at the Suisun Wildlife Center, helping care for injured wildlife. Barbara lives in Green Valley, California with her beloved border collie, Prudence.
